From Her Mother’s Country
Series of five photographs, 2025
From Her Mother’s Country is a series of five photographs in which the artist’s daughter holds and interacts with soil gathered from Poland – the country where the artist was born and from which she later emigrated to the UK.
About the Work
The photographs explore the relationship between mother, child and place, and what it means for a connection to a country to be passed from one generation to the next. Soil becomes a physical link to a place that holds different meanings for each of them: lived experience and memory for the mother; family history and inherited connection for the child.
The photographs focus on the child’s gestures as she holds, touches and plays with the earth. At times the soil is gathered carefully in her palms; at others it slips through her fingers or leaves traces on her skin. These simple actions bring together body, material and place, reflecting on how ideas of home and belonging shift across borders and generations.
The series was developed within Life Lines, a wider project responding to the story of Polish-Jewish Holocaust survivor Naomi Warren and exploring soil as a material connection to place, displacement and memory
