Exhibitions as Experiences: One-Day Online Workshop

£70.00

Saturday 28 November 2026 | 10am–3pm (UK time) | Online via Zoom

How can we create exhibitions that audiences want to spend time in, rather than simply walk through?

This one-day workshop is designed for artists who want to move beyond conventional exhibition displays and explore more imaginative ways of presenting their work.

Drawing on my own exhibition practice and research supported by an Arts Council England Develop Your Creative Practice grant, we'll explore how installation, sound, moving image, text and interactive elements can transform an exhibition from a presentation of work into an experience.

Through examples, discussion and practical exercises, you'll have the opportunity to rethink how your own work might inhabit a space, engage audiences and create more meaningful encounters.

What you'll take away

By the end of the workshop, you'll have:

  • Fresh ideas for your next exhibition, including ways to move beyond simply displaying work on walls.

  • Practical approaches to audience engagement, encouraging visitors to spend more time with your work and interact with it in different ways.

  • A better understanding of exhibition storytelling, including how space, sequence, materials and sensory elements can shape the visitor's experience.

  • A starting plan for your own project, identifying specific ideas and approaches you could develop for a future exhibition.

  • Individual feedback and new perspectives, through discussion of your ideas in a supportive small-group setting.

Who is it for?

This workshop is for photographers and visual artists who have some experience of exhibiting and would like to experiment with how their work is presented.

You don't need experience in installation or interactive art, just curiosity and a willingness to explore new possibilities.

How the workshop works

The workshop takes place online via Zoom, from 10am to 3pm (UK time), with breaks during the day.

Places are limited to eight participants to allow time for discussion, practical exercises and individual feedback.

You'll be invited to bring an existing or developing project to work with during the session.

Cancellations and rescheduling

If the workshop is cancelled by the organiser, you'll receive a full refund.
